About StaR

What is StaR?

Study and Revision is a video tuition service with over 1,000 videos across the core school subjects of English, Maths and Science, and the Qur'an.

Videos are categorised in such a way as to give you the easiest routes to the content you need to learn. For core subjects this means by topic, exam board or model answer, and for the Qur'an videos can be viewed by chapter (sura), day (hijri) or section (juz'u).

The interactive learning environment is designed to keep you motivated and help you learn in the most optimal way possible. Badges are awarded for reaching milestones, and Learning Schedules allow you to distribute the videos you need to learn over a time period that suits you (weekends optional!)

For more, have a read of our About page.

Which subjects does StaR cover?

StaR covers the three core school subjects of English, Maths and Science, as well as the Qur'an.

English is broken down into the sub-subjects of English Literature and English Language content, while Science is broken down into Physics, Biology and Chemistry.

You can see the subjects we cover, and the resources we have for each one, on the Resource Browser page.

How many videos do you have?

Well over 1,000, with more being added all the time!

For a breakdown of the number of videos by subject, see the About page.

Can I trust the quality of your content?

Yes! The founder and curator of this site is the ex-headteacher of a secondary school with years of experience helping students learn in the best way possible. The teachers offering the English, Maths and Science tutorials are also highly experienced and several are heads of subjects in their respective schools.

In terms of the Islamic content, all items in this explanation of the Qur'an have been thoroughly checked by an Islamic scholar. More information can be found on the quranstudyandrevision.com homepage.

Who's behind StaR?

Some credit comes down to the site's founder Mr. El Hady, who funded the site and project, completed the rendition of the Qur'an and completed most of the English videos; but of course, he would be first to say that this is only here because of his superb team.

You might be surprised to know that there are over 70 people from 21 different countries who have worked on StaR in all its development stages over the last 6 years. Everyone one of them has contributed in some way. If you think something in here worthwhile, thank the team. If something ain't right, blame Hady!

Account & joining

Is StaR free to use?

Ultimately? No. StaR is a paid service.

However, we offer a two day, risk-free trial during which you can cancel at any time to avoid payment.

Moreover, our package options are really flexible, meaning you pay only for the type of account that suits you.

Why do I have to enter my payment details to start a free trial?

This is a standard practice for paid services offering a free trial. Amazon Prime, for example, works in the same way.

Don't worry, though; no payment is taken at sign-up, only after your trial ends. You are free to cancel before this time and never pay a penny.

Payment details are required at sign-up merely as a means of identity authentication. It means we can avoid the problem of a user coming to the end of his or her trial period, then registering a new e-mail address and signing up and having another trial, repeat ad-infinitum.

What payment methods do you take?

Our secure payments gateway accepts all major debit and credit cards, along with PayPal.

Can I pay monthly rather than yearly?

You sure can.

During the sign-up process, whichever package you choose, you'll be given the option of paying monthly or yearly. (Yearly payments are better value, though!)

Can I invite other people to use my account?

You certainly can, provided you're the holder of a main StaR account (as opposed to a free account holder invited by another user), and at sign-up you chose a package that allows more than one user.

The number of users you can invite depends on your package. You can see available packages here.

Why such a short free trial?

We feel the trial period offered is sufficient to decide whether StaR is for you.

We don't have hundreds of thousands of videos, and a longer trial period could mean a user were able to view all the videos and have no need to continue to a full account.

Moreover, school exam periods are typically spread over just a few months. It wouldn't make sense, therefore, to offer a 30-day trial, for example, that covered a whole 50% of this period.

How do I cancel my account?

If you decide you've had enough, no problem, though we'd love you to stay.

To cancel your account, please contact us and we'll take it from there.

If you pay monthly, be sure to do this before your next payment is due, otherwise you may be charged automatically for the next period.

We want to do everything to limit your reason for canceling, though. If there's any problem we can help with, don't ever hesitate to contact us.

Using StaR

How do I get started?

Don't worry, the site is super easy to use, and we've worked really hard to make the experience fun, intuitive and gamified.

The first step, of course, is to join! To do so just click the "Start learning" button at the top of the page. This will take you through the join process where you give us a few details (name, etc.), choose the package that's right for you and, finally, enter your payment details.

Once you've joined the next thing is to login. Once you're in you'll be greeted with your first badge just to welcome you! After that you'll be taken to your Dashboard, which is the main member page.

The Dashboard is your hub, showing your progress, recent activity and much more. We recommend taking some time to explore its contents so you can get the most out of the site.

Then it's just a case of watching the vids that you need. Be sure to take advantage of the many features the site offers while doing so!

How do I find videos?

There are lots of ways to find videos on StaR.

You can browse videos via the Resource Browser. To begin, just click a subject in the top navigation (e.g. "English"). That will take you to that subject's section of the Resource Browser. You can then drill further down, to find the vids you need.

If you know which video you're after and you know its name, you can search for it directly using the search field at the top of each page.

Finally, you can access some videos direct from your Dashboard - for example, videos you've watched recently, marked as favourites, marked as 'watch later', or which have been popular with other users recently.

How do I favourite videos?

Found a really helpful vid? That's what our favouriting feature is for.

Just go to the video in question, then click the star icon to the right of the video, in the vertical strip of icons.

The video will then show up on your favourites page, which can be accessed from your Dashboard.

In case you ever want to UNfavourite the video, just click the star a second time.

Can I assign a video to watch it later instead?

Not got time to watch a video now? No problem; the site lets you mark a video as one to watch later.

To do so, go to the video in question, then click the clock icon to the right of the video, in the vertical strip of icons.

The video will then show up on your Watch Later page, which can be accessed from your Dashboard.

Once you've eventually watched the video, you can click the clock icon a second time to UNmark it as watch later.

How do I create a Learning Schedule?

Learning Schedules help you organise your learning around a time period that works for you (weekends optional!)

To create one, go to Dashboard > Learning Schedules and click to create a new one.

This will take you to the Learning Schedule creation screen. It's really simple; you just need to choose the topic(s) you want to learn, and the time period you have to learn them (by choosing a start and end date), and - boom - the site distributes all the videos under the chosen topic(s) across the chosen days.

You can then return to your created Learning Schedule via your Dashboard. You can see under each day which videos you should watch that day, and it even tracks your punctuality and progress!

What if I can't find what I'm looking for?

To find content, you can browse our videos - by a range of criteria - or search directly using the box above.

If you can't find something, though, it could be we're still working on it. We update the site with new videos on a regular basis, aligned to the curriculum and exam boards.

To check about a specific topic, feel free to contact us.

How do I invite other users to share my account?

To invite a user (provided your package allows user invites), go to Dashboard > My account > My users > My invites. That will take you to a screen showing your current invites (if any) and, if you have any left, you'll be able to click the "New invite" button to issue a new one.

Can I check invitees' progress?

You certainly can.

You can view your invited users on the Invites page (Dashboard > My account > My users > My invites).

Those who have accepted the invitation and gone on to join StaR are shown with a green tick in the "Accepted?" column. Just click the "Check progress" button to the right to view their Dashboard and see how they're getting on.

Note this is a one-way privilege; invited users cannot similarly view your Dashboard.
